Kalaty Carol Bolton Collection

Kalaty CB-889 Carol Bolton

If we had to choose just one single collection of all we have seen in the last few years that represents the best antique reproduction oriental rugs, it is easily the Kalaty Carol Bolton Collection.  Designer Carol Hicks Bolton’s unique combinations of color and texture, plus her love of antiquity are the basis for the entire collection. Kalaty has interpreted her ideas through a special production of high quality antique style rugs. And we are absolutely in love with them.

Carol got her start as a retailer of home furnishings Texas.  Furniture manufacturer, EJ Victor, took a special interest in how she would mix and match different fabric patterns and finishes to create an antique, eclectic look.  This was no coincidence.  In her own words, her style is all about layers, and creating and “old” look.  After partnering with EJ Victor to create an antique reproduction furniture line, they eventually also began working with Kalaty Rugs to produce a line of wonderfully done renditions of fine Persian masterpieces.

There are currently 20 beautiful designs within the collection, and each rug is like an heirloom, an exquisite relic from the past.  Premium hand spun New Zealand wool is treated with natural, vegetable dyes to create a soft, nubby texture and muted color. These exceptional rugs feature unequaled attention to detail through handwork, finishing, as well as careful hand distressing that infuses many of these rugs with the antique qualities for which Carol Hicks Bolton is renowned.

Kalaty CB-889While all of the Kalaty Carol Bolton Collecton rugs are outstanding, one design in particular reigns supreme in our hometown of Lexington, Kentucky.  The Bluegrass area is known for thoroughbred horseracing, the world’s finest bourbons, and small town atmosphere.  We love leather and hardwoods, and the CB-889 fits into our style perfectly.  This antique reproduction Serapi gives the absolute best look and feel of a true antique without the antique rug price.  We personally give the rug our stamp of approval as one of the best antique reproduction rugs out there.  Anywhere.  Period.

We love this collection and think you will too.  You can see them for yourself in our showroom, or click here to see them on our website.  THANK YOU to all of our wonderful customers for keeping us rockin’!

Decorating with Black

decorating with black rugs

Is black an absence of color, or is it a combination of all that the spectrum of light can offer? Either way, black can be vibrant, expressive, and beautiful. Our client loved how this Nourison Living Treasures rug turned out after being slightly hesitant about adding a dominantly black rug to her neutral decor.  Don’t be hesitant about decorating with black, celebrate it!

You could say that interior decorating with black has gotten a bad rap.  People often describe black as dark, depressing, heavy…  But the truth is that a little bit of black is essential in every room.  It can also be difficult to avoid.  It can add drama and style, and can provide a grounding anchor to a furniture setting.  It also allows all of the colors surrounding it to appear more expressive.

Black is a universal color.  It knows know decorative bounds.  It  can be used in any room, in any style. Whether it’s a sleek and modern couch or geometric patterned rug, or an elegant and feminine iron staircase, black can be masculine and feminine, formal or casual, severe or romantic.

Our on-staff interior designers insist that it is important that every room have just a little bit of black. It has a grounding effect that gives the eye a place to focus. Too many soft colors with nothing to ground them provide no depth, no drama. It can actually be confusing to the eye.  It’s not that you need to have a massive amount of black, just enough to tie things together. A few black picture frames on a wall, a black coffee table, black trim on the walls, or even something as simple as a pillow is enough.  Black can also be used as an accent is that it can tie a grouping of items together that otherwise don’t mesh.

As our client found out, black can be an expressive, vibrant color.  Don’t be afraid of decorating with black.  You can see a great selection of black oriental rugs by clicking here.  Otherwise, please come visit our Lexington, Kentucky showroom to speak with one of our on-staff interior designers about how you can decorate with black!

Decorating with Outdoor Rugs

outdoor rugs

After the long, harsh winter we’ve had in the Southeast, it seems that every chance to get out and enjoy this beautiful Spring weather is a chance to rejuvenate mind, body, and soul.  Maybe that’s why outdoor spaces for living, cooking and entertaining are more popular than ever before.  We’ve been spending a lot of time lately talking with customers about decorating with outdoor rugs.

Stylish rugs that beat the elements are popular embellishments to these popular outdoor spaces. Thanks to fiber technology advancements in durability, this new generation of rugs truly thrives and not just survives outdoors.  Mother Nature can be harsh, but we’ve found a few rugs that can withstand her wrath!

Today’s all-weather rugs are not only similar to their indoor counterparts in looks and texture, but they can add a vibrant, transitional touch to any outdoor space.  Like indoor rugs, they can be custom-designed, hand-woven or machine-hooked and come in a variety of colors. Bland beige and boring brown have been replaced with colors like scarlet, rich chocolate, turquoise and more.

Our outdoor rugs of choice come from Surya’s Rain collection.  I have personally tested ???? from the rain collection for three seasons now and have been amazed at the durability and resiliency of the structure and color.  Because of the this amazing performance and low price, this is the only outdoor rug collection that we stock in our showroom.

Here are some tips about how to select the perfect outdoor rug for your space:

First, think about how you’ll use the rug. Will it be left outdoors in all seasons or will you store the piece indoors during the winter season? Will it be under a covered porch, in a sunroom or in an exposed area like a deck or patio?

If a rug will be a permanent outdoor fixture, the entire rug — including the backing and trim — should be 100 percent polypropylene to withstand harsh outdoor weather, resist mold and mildew, and maintain its size and color. One of the best things about polypropylene rugs is they maintain their size and shape, even after a cleaning using mild detergent, a scrub brush and a water hose.

Another durability factor to consider with outdoor rugs is color fading.  Outdoor rugs are solution dried and (the fibers) are extruded with color pigment. That means the color is part of the fiber, not separate, so it’s colorfast.  A quality rug will not stain or fade.

Kalaty Artisan AN-041

Kalaty Artisan AN-041

Kalaty Artisan AN-041

Sometime you just need to take a step back and take a look at the old world with fresh eyes.  There are hundreds of applications for traditional oriental rugs in modern or contemporary homes.  Our Lexington, Kentucky client recently remodeled a lovely Cape Cod style home in a more contemporary style and was having a difficult time blending her more modern tastes with the traditional architecture.  We suggested the Kalaty Artisan collection.  This collection of oriental rugs with traditional motifs and patterns with narrow borders gave the room a transitional, yet timeless appeal.

Today’s oriental rug manufacturers are faced with a customer base that is demanding more modern styled rugs to fit with traditional decor.  This is challenge to say the least.  If a design is too modern, it will clash with traditional architecture.  And sticking with the same old rug designs is a sure way to slowly disappear in the marketplace.  Top manufacturers have found that tweaking antique oriental rug designs and utilizing today’s most popular colors can be a solution to this design problem.

The Kalaty Artisan Collection is an excellent example of this new production.  Traditional, repetitive background patterns are employed and paired with narrow, simple borders.  This allows rugs to be placed off-center in a room and still keep the setting balanced.  Small borders give a more modern appeal and do not take away from the overall pattern while still defining edges.  Simple color palettes in popular colors are used… our personal favorite is the smoke grey.  Each Kalaty Artisan rug is hand knotted using premium hand spun wool.

Our client on Clay Avenue elected to use very simple colors on walls and furniture, allowing accessories and oriental rugs to bring punches of vivid color to her decor.  The Kalaty Artisan AN-041 was the perfect fit for her needs.  The warm tones brought out the mid-tones in her rough-hewn hardwood floors and highlighted accessories in the room.  The rustic texture is soft on her feet, and complimentary of other fabrics and textures throughout the room.  She loved it!

Round Dining Table Decor

Working in oriental rugs, we get a lot of questions regarding round rugs and round dining table decor.  Creating the perfect room with a round dining table isn’t always easy, but can be managed with the right planning and design.

First off, why do people decorate with a round dining table in the first place?    New home construction places a premium on larger living spaces and open concept design.  Fewer families are using dining rooms (mine only gets used on Holidays) and are congregating in family rooms and kitchens.  Because of this, dining room footprints have been getting smaller and smaller.  Round dining tables not only soften a room with a lack of hard edges, but maximize your seating space with minimal overall square footage.

Round tables also serve a purpose as a great way to get family and friends closer in a way that invites conversation.  A round table has no head or foot.  It has no beginning, and no end.  Every person seated at the table has equal access to both the item on the table and the conversation around it.  Think Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table and how it represented them all being equal, but in a way that substitutes your grandparents and kids…

Round dining tables can also comes with their own set of problems.  To maximize seating, many people purchase tables that are functionally too large for their space.  Sizes of round tables are somewhat limited.   Finding the perfect round oriental rug to anchor the room requires the correct size and style.  And other considerations such as whether the table can be centered in the room take on added importance.

Here are a few points to consider before selection your round dining table.

First, measure your room well and roughly lay out any other furniture that will be with the table. Sideboards, servers, and dining hutches can take up a considerable amount of space.  You want to be able to center the table in the room if possible to visually balance the setting.  Make sure that you are able to comfortably pull the chairs away from the table and sit down without coming off of any oriental rugs or hitting other furniture.

Second, while custom made tables can be made in any size, most manufacturers stick with a standard size of 36″, 48″, 54″ and 60″ diameter tops.  54″ inch tops are the most popular that we sell at our store.  Take these sizes into account with chair options before finalizing your purchase.

If possible, make sure that your round dining table is centered in the room or on any major focal points such as large windows, mirrors, or lighting fixtures.

Dining chair sizes vary greatly.  Most customers elect use either arm chairs or arm-less chairs solely instead of a combination of both.  If you decide to use arm chairs, measure to ensure that the top of the arms will comfortably fit underneath the table top.  Want to know how many chairs you can easily fit around the table?  Use this equation we got directly from the interior design pros:  (Diameter of your table x 3.14) / (width of a single chair)

Some tables allow for seating to be expanded with the use of leaves.  Round dining tables are no exception, although there are not as many.  Expansions may be made by adding leaves to the center of the table (creating an oval) or by adding leave to the circumference of the table.  In either case, make sure that you take in this added square footage when measuring out how much space the table will occupy in your room.

When selecting an oriental rug for your dining table, make sure you get a rug large enough for the table to remain functional.  A common mistake is to select a rug that is too small, even though it looks large visually.  Measure by pulling out your chairs as if you were going to sit in them.  Now measure the diameter of that area.  If the rug is too small, your chairs may come off of the rug when you sit down, and get caught of the rug when you push back in towards the table.  While this may be a small inconvenience if you do not use your table often, it can become a larger issue if you entertain regularly.  Common round oriental size are 6′, 8′ and 10′ in diameter.

Loloi Xavier Jute Rug

loloi xavier jute rugWho says jute rugs have to be boring and rough textured?  Not us!  Manufacturers are doing some amazing things with natural materials such as jute. With some of the new techniques and manufacturing methods, jute weave can be soft, durable, and beautiful! This Loloi Xavier Jute Rug is a great example of how modern tastes and design are influencing old world materials and weaving.

Jute is a long vegetable fiber that can be spun into coarse, strong threads.  It is the same material that is used to make burlap, which is not very soft or comfortable on the skin.  Manufacturers of clothing and textiles have worked for decades to find ways to make jute softer and more durable.  Jute is easily sustainable, biodegradable, and inexpensive.  This is why manufacturers across many fields are researching ways to use this amazing fiber!  Even paper manufacturers are using just to try to combat deforestation.

Muted Oriental Rugs

muted oriental rug

A rug doesn’t have to exhibit vibrant color to be beautiful… Some of the most skilled artisans in the world specialize in creating soft, muted oriental rugs. A lifetime of work goes into learning how to harmonize color and to let subtle differences bring out the beauty in a handmade work of art.

While synthetic dyes can be used to create soft, muted colors, natural dyes have been the standard in oriental rugs for over 3000 years.  As with any dye, creating brighter and stronger color variations is typically easier.  Once a dye is created, you can simply continually overdye a material to create stronger colors.  Softer colors require more skill and patience.  Most muted oriental rugs will be made of wool, which is a material that must be mordanted before it can be dyed in a colorfast manner.  Because of the natural oils in wool, not all colors can be dyed, and softer colors can be more challenging.

Maybe this is why we appreciate soft and muted colors in oriental rugs so much.  Creating a batch of light colored wool requires a skilled hand- trying to create multiple batches with vegetable dyes that are similar enough to use in oriental rugs requires a master’s touch.  A difference of a couple of degrees in cooking temperature, or a miniscule variation of the dye recipe can create a completely different shade of color.

The design process using muted colors also requires an artists touch.  Blending primary colors or traditional reds, blues, and golds can be simple.  Finding harmony among soft blues, beiges, golds, and browns requires experience.  And in many cases, finding the perfect balance of color takes trial and error.

One example is the current trends of grey colors.  Wool is naturally a light, buttery color.  Simply dying wool grey usually results in brown tones.  It has taken years of effort and experimentation for high end manufacturers to create color recipes and combinations to appease today’s interior designers.

We find beauty in the small details and the thousands of variations of muted oriental rugs.  We hope that you will too.  THANK YOU to all of the customers that allow us to work with his amazing art form everyday! You can see a huge selection of great oriental rugs at www.lexingtonorientalrugs.com

Nourison 2206 Brown

Nourison 2206 Brown

We recently delivered a 9×12 Nourison 2206 Brown oriental rug to a customer in the Hamburg neighborhood of Lexington, Kentucky.  We love how the rug looks with the existing furniture and decor.  The customer loves saving 20% on her next family heirloom.  Here is the story of how this room came together and how our customer saved hundreds on a rug she loves.

The Nourison 2000 collection is arguably Nourison’s most popular and most successful grouping of rugs.  These pieces are high quality hand-tufted rugs made with soft and durable New Zealand wool and accented with silk highlights.  This construction is comparable to hand-knotted wool and silk rugs in look, feel, and durability, but can be found at a fraction of the cost due to the increase in speed of production of hand-tufting versus hand knotting.  This collection is extensive and has a huge variety of designs and color palettes, and also comes in multiple sizes.  Customers love the selection and price, dealers love the durability and variety of sizes.

The Nourison 2206 Brown is one of our favorite withing the collection.  It has a relatively neutral color palette with deep browns, beige, and soft golds accented with reds and hints of green.  The 2206 Brown also has a coordinating design, the 2206 Camel, that is basically the reverse of the colors with a slightly different pattern.  Both rugs work perfectly in autumn colored rooms.

Our customer came to us with more needs than wants.  She has a young son, who like most boys, can be a little hard on furniture and rugs.  She also had existing furniture and wall colors that were not an option to change.  The Nourison 2206 Brown was perfect fit!  She loved the overall look and feel of the rug, and the colors fit well in the room.  She was also happy to know about the extreme durability of the collection and its ability to be cleaned.  Combine that with Nourison’s semi-annual sale, and she saved a whopping 20% on the perfect rug!
